Bairnsdale Early Learning Centre

Kindergarten
34

Bairnsdale Early Learning Centre has been an integral part of our local community for more than 40 years.

We are an inclusive kindergarten offering an integrated 3 and 4 year old early childhood development program. We offer a diverse range of activities and free play times children self-select, encouraging them to develop their independence and teamwork skills. Our huge outdoor play area has lots of trees for natural shade and is the perfect space for activity and adventure.

Children enrolling in our service in 2019 are eligible for the Victorian Government drought kindergarten fee subsidy.

Environment

We have a large playground that invites children to touch, observe and explore the natural world. Our wholesome space nurtures their curiosity and prompts important conversations about caring for the environment. We recently added a new pergola over the sandpit and a shade sail over the climbing area to ensure our children are always sun-protected.

Our kindergarten features:

  • Planned and intentional indoor spaces
  • Large outdoor space
  • Sand pit
  • Mud pit
  • Trees and natural shade
  • Gardening beds for herbs and vegetables
  • Play area with climbing equipment
  • Swings
  • Bicycle track
  • Gross motor play equipment for activities such as climbing, skipping, throwing and catching
  • Water tank
Activities

We have lots of fun experiences for children to engage and express themselves! We use visual guides around the centre, including a visual timetable, to develop a sense of weekly routine. Children at our centre foster a relationship of respect and stewardship for the environment through key sustainability activities and initiatives.

Our kindergarten:

  • Encourages recycling
  • Promotes sustainable living and encourages children to develop everyday sustainable practises

We arrange experts to run specialised workshops that teach the children about the world around them. Past examples include the Melbourne Museum outreach program (including Dinosaur Fossils and Backyard Bugs), Living Safely With Dogs and Reptile handlers.

We also participate in Smiles 4 Miles, encouraging and promoting good oral health habits and healthy eating among children.

Health and wellbeing

Encouraging healthy eating habits to children from a young age is important for positive self-development. That’s why we empower children to make healthy and nutritious choices through education and active involvement in food preparation. We also work closely with families to help them make the right food choices for their children.

At our centre:

  • We grow our own produce in our garden including herbs, vegetables, and fruit
  • We practise and emphasise food safety
  • We offer progressive snack and lunchtime to empower children to ask for what they want and when
  • We educate children and their families about healthy eating and nutrition
Family and community

We love working closely with families and the community. We encourage families and the local community to take an active role in our students’ early learning development through workshops and presentations.

Parents can participate when:

  • We celebrate significant cultural festivals and days together
  • We invite them to talk to the children about their job, hobbies and other interesting topics

Various people, groups or services within our community we engage with regularly include:

  • Wellbeing practitioners
  • Indigenous community members or groups
Special Services

We welcome all children to our centre, and we have a strong focus on supporting families with diverse backgrounds who may have a range of needs.

Our educators are experienced in working with children who live with a range of physical and intellectual disability or have experienced challenges and trauma. Our educators are equipped with the skills to provide safe and nurturing environments to all children.
